Local Missions

Serve in Our Homeless Network. It takes many volunteers during Host Weeks when our classrooms become shelter for families who are temporarily homeless and in NAM’s Interfaith Hospitality Network. When IHN families are at Northwoods, serve on an evening or overnight shift, provide a dinner, or be on our move-in or move-out team. Our Host Weeks are April 20-27, July 13-20, and October 12-19.
Mentor an At-Risk Youth. You can make a difference in an at-risk boy’s life, most of whom do not have a father present, by visiting your assigned friend just 20 minutes once a week at Wells Middle School between 8:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Build a Habitat House. Northwood teams are organized for occasional Saturday workdays to help build homes for families in need at Habitat for Humanity’s building site in our area. There are jobs for both skilled and unskilled volunteers, but must be at least 16 years old.
Befriend Bridges Mothers. Join our outreach to mothers and grandmothers who live at The Bridges Apartments (15915 Kuykendahl). Spanish not required! The second and fourth Wednesdays, 9:45 a.m. -12:00 p.m., our rotating teams lead or assist with crafts, play with toddlers while their mothers work, or just interact with the mothers. Or come on the first and third Wednesdays for to help with English practice.
Build Bridges to Children. During Spring Break and the summer, Northwoods provides teams on Thursdays, 10:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., to provide games and crafts and to help serve governmental box lunches to the children at The Bridges Community Center. The Bridges is a multi-cultural setting and a volunteer opportunity for all ages, including parents with their children, teens, and retired persons.
Learn About Other Faiths. We offer opportunities to dialogue with persons of other faiths. In the fall, interfaith dinners are planned in homes.
